5 Great Camping Locations Around The Isle Of Skye

The Isle of Skye is the largest and most northerly island off Scotland. Renowned for its picturesque scenery and interesting history it’s also home to an array of amazing wildlife including the golden eagle and red deer.

With so much natural beauty on offer it is little wonder the Isle of Skye is a popular camping destination. If you want to spend time in the great outdoors what better place to do it than on the wonderful and exciting Isle of Skye? Here are five locations where you might just find it hard to leave.

1) Lochside Caravan Site
This small site is only home to five hard standing pitches and 6 tent pitches which makes it the perfect peaceful campsite. Located on the side of a loch, as the name suggests, and surrounded by incredible mountains, Lochside Caravan Site offers peace and tranquillity at the heart of nature.

Otters can often be seen swimming by in the evenings and boats are also available to hire for a trip on the loch. The sunrise over the water is stunning and the owner is friendly and always on hand to help. Situated just a few minutes’ drive from the Skye Bridge – although when you’re on the site it feels like you’re in the middle of nowhere – this campsite is in a fantastic location.

2) Torvaig Caravan and Campsite
With over 3 acres of land, electric hook ups and Wi-Fi, Torvaig Caravan and Campsite has a lot to offer. Located in the heart of the Isle of Skye countryside, this great site is surrounded by rolling hills and soaring mountains.

Lying just outside Portree, the capital of the island, the site is close to a beautiful bay as well as incredible nature trails, hikes and walks. If you’re looking for a relaxing break not too far from civilisation Torvaig is a great place to be.

3) Glenbrittle Campsite
Voted the number 1 UK campsite in the Daily Telegraph, Glenbrittle Campsite is located on Loch Brittle at the foot of the Black Cullin mountain range.

Pitches are spread across the field with some close to the fantastic shoreline, while others are tucked away closer to the mountains. With some of the best rock climbing in Britain just a few steps away from your tent, Glenbrittle is the ideal site if you’re looking for an active camping break.

4) Skye Club Site
Although this site is mainly for members, they also welcome non-members to take advantage of their wonderful location. Situated on Loch Greshornish the Skye club site is based on a working croft.

With wonderful wildlife in and around the site, including otters in the loch, golden eagles flying overhead and the famous highland cows in surrounding fields, this site is a natural beauty surrounded by stunning scenery.

5) Kinloch Campsite
This simple family run campsite is quite small and very friendly. The village of Dunvegan is just a five minute walk away from the site and is rich in culture and history, including a fascinating castle which is open to visitors.

This is another site based by one of the Isle of Skye’s picturesque lochs and campers can even enjoy a seal-watching boat trip. There are also many activities available in the nearby town including fishing, horse riding, bike hire and golf.
