How Do Historical Events Influence Modern Culture And Customs?

This article looks at a number of significant historical events, and how they have influenced traditions and customs in the modern world.

Setting a Standard

The vast majority, if not all, of the world’s modern traditions and customs have come from something that happened in the distant past. There are many events of historical significance that are marked and celebrated in some way throughout the year.

We looked at a number of these events, what happened, and how they are commemorated today.

Religious Festivals

This is perhaps the most obvious thing to look at, and is unquestionably the one that reaches the most people around the world. Every religion is steeped in tradition thanks to a significant person or event in its past, which sees the anniversary of these marked on an annual basis or at different points throughout the year.

Such events are often marked and celebrated by the giving and receiving of gifts, as well as traditional practices to commemorate the event or person involved.

Guy Fawkes Night

In the United Kingdom, Guy Fawkes night is celebrated on November the 5th every year. This date is marked as the date when the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 was foiled – named after Fawkes, who was the chief plotter.

This event is celebrated by the burning of an effigy of Fawkes – quite sinister for the 21st century! – And the ignition and exploding of fireworks both at public and private displays across the country. The Gunpowder Plot is one of the most historically significant events in the history of the UK.

Independence Day

Termed “Fourth of July” in the United States, Independence Day is perhaps the most famous of all global celebrations outside of religious festivals.

This date is marked to celebrate the United States’ declaration of independence from the UK in 1776, and is traditionally celebrated across the country with parties and fireworks displays.

In Cuisine

Wherever you look around the world, there are examples of how culinary inspirations have travelled between civilisations throughout history and became a stalwart of what we traditionally know today.

One of the best examples of this today would be Italian food, which is famous for its independence and for being different wherever you travel in the country. There is a definite North/South divide when it comes to Italian food – owing to the Roman Empire and how they travelled, with those from mainland Europe bringing back continental cuisine ideas, with those from the Mediterranean bringing early culinary inspiration from Greece and Africa.

Demonstrating the importance of all of these historical factors, they are all a common part of education in their respective countries, with many being taught or well-known around the entire world.
