September Serves As Life Insurance Awareness Month

Imagine being seventeen years old and having to drop out of high school to run your family’s business because your father suddenly passed away.  Your parents did not make the choice to get life insurance and now you, your mother, and siblings are faced with the burden of funeral costs and keeping the family business running.  This is a scenario that people hear all too often, and is actually the life story of Cake Boss star, Buddy Valastro.  Buddy has been chosen as the spokesperson of Life Insurance Awareness Month, which is September.  People are not aware that obtaining life insurance can be easy and affordable.  People can even purchase online life insurance, so there are no excuses why anyone should leave their family with nothing after they pass.

The Importance of Life Insurance
The importance of life insurance is an issue that needs to be brought to light to the American public. Life Insurance Month has been in existence since 2004 and for a good reason.  Nearly 100 million American adults have no life insurance coverage.  Further, of the adults who do have coverage, the majority have less coverage than is recommended.  These statistics need to change, and people need to understand that they need to step up and plan for their family’s future, if they’re not there to support them.  If people are aware, they can shop online for life insurance, they may feel more comfortable exploring the options that are out there.

Although Buddy was faced with the stresses of managing 30 employees at the young age of 17, he was fortunate that his late father left the family a business.  Most families are not this lucky and are left with nothing but funeral costs and debt.  Life Insurance Awareness Month is the time for people to ask themselves:  “What is my plan for my family when I die?” Some people may think of it as a morbid thought, but the thought needs to cross people’s minds, so they can take action before it’s too late.

Choosing Life Insurance
There are many avenues you can go down to choose life insurance.  Try contacting the human-resource department at your job; they may have policies you can buy into.  If that comes up a dead end, ask friends and relatives if they have a financial planner they work with and like.  Financial planners are great resources and can help you apply for coverage and give you an idea of how much it will cost.  Don’t be afraid of conducting a search on the net and see what coverage is available.  No matter what route you choose to go, compare prices and coverage.  Rest assure that although life insurance is an added expense, it is worth the peace of mind you will receive in return.
