The Hottest Hobbies For 2012

When you consider finding a hobby, you often think back to being a kid and collecting football cards or pressing flowers. The truth is that nearly everyone, adults included, has some kind of hobby that provides time out from a busy working life. Hobbies are a great way to learn something new, to challenge yourself and, most of all, have some fun. Just in case you need inspiration, here are a few of the hobbies that are expected to be big in 2012.

Save yourself some money
For many, the recent economic downturn has inspired fresh interest in baking, crafts and fashion, with cake decoration enjoying one of the biggest booms over the last 12 months. Baking gives a huge sense of achievement, creating something completely from scratch and sharing it with family and friends. What’s more, you have the added challenge of improving on your recipes and flavours.

Saving money, not to mention the ‘make do and mend’ attitude that has surfaced again recently, has also brought about a large interest in crafts such as sewing, knitting and crotchet. More people have become interested in making their own clothes, or even embellishing items already in their wardrobe to make them unique or give them a new lease of life.

Of course, fashion has always been popular, especially with the influence of the many celebrity gossip magazines and TV shows. The interest in all things vintage has really taken off, with the thrill of searching for the best vintage items in second-hand shops and local markets. Vintage is everywhere right now and the style is even inspiring new items such as linens, toys and electrical goods.

Find your creative side
A great hobby isn’t just one that helps you to save money, however, as it can also be a great way to get creative and express yourself. DJing is a really hot trend this year, which may come as a surprise because many people expect that expensive equipment is needed. The truth is, getting involved in DJing is easier than you think, with DJ lessons available around the country and inexpensive starter DJ mixing kits that fit perfectly into your home.

Likewise, photography has also experienced a boom, thanks to the fantastic range of inexpensive and easy-to-use equipment available. From the simple point-and-shoot digital cameras, quirky apps and software like Instagram to adjust your pictures, to the more comprehensive SLRs, there is a route into photography for everyone.
