Why Malta Should Be Your Next Holiday Destination

Throughout southern Europe, the tourist can find a vast number of potential holiday destinations, each of which offers a range of perfectly good reasons to visit. From stunning sandy beaches and luxurious hotels to spectacular historic buildings and exciting theme parks, every location has a range of plus points.

Fifty miles south of Sicily, you’ll find the country of Malta, an archipelago of islands which are proving increasingly popular with holiday-makers from all over Europe. It has a unique history and has been in a strategically important location for many centuries. And in the summer months the climate is simply sensational.

There are many islands in the group, but only three of them (Malta, Gozo and Comino) are inhabited. Shipping has been hugely important to the Maltese economy over the decades, and that’s still the case today. Tourism is also vital, a fact that has led to the construction of a huge number of hotels and holiday villas throughout the country.

All across Malta, there are cathedrals, museums, art galleries and churches that are just waiting to be explored. The cultural landscape of Malta has been shaped by periods of peace and conflict, and by a long-term relationship with the Catholic Church. If you’re happy to explore when on vacation, you’ll find plenty to see and do.

A million tourists can’t be wrong
Well over a million tourists visit every year, and many of them like nothing more than to lie on a sandy beach and top up their tans. Close to the ferry terminal at Cirkewwa, you’ll find a superb beach at Paradise Bay. As well as catching a few rays, it’s also possible to enjoy a little snorkelling if you’re in the mood for something a little more active.

Sliema, also known as Tas-Sliema, is an attractive port on the north-east coast of the island of Malta. In addition to offering a large number of popular landmarks and attractions, it’s also home to a thriving harbour, from which several companies and independent vessel owners take passengers on trips around the islands.

As well as giving tourists a unique view of the country’s beautiful coastline, these journeys are also a great way to enjoy some much-needed cooler air during the summer. The breeze off the sea is especially welcome on the hottest days, because Malta’s high temperatures can get a little overwhelming at times. During these occasions, it’s a good idea to get as much shelter as possible.
